When did you realize your relationship was doomed?

So for me, honestly it was this stupid tiny moment. We were in the car on the way back from his mom’s birthday dinner. It had been awkward already because his family kinda lowkey hated me — they never said it outright, but it was there, the weird comments, the passive digs. Anyway, we’re driving back, it’s raining, and he just starts ranting about how annoying his family is. I tried to lighten the mood and said something like, “Well at least they didn’t throw mashed potatoes at me, right?” trying to joke. And he looked at me, totally deadpan, and said: “Can you ever just not make everything about you?” It was like he slapped me. We sat in silence the whole way home. When we got back to his apartment, I went straight to the bathroom and cried quietly so he wouldn’t hear. That night he didn’t even come check on me, just played Xbox in the living room. It was so small. But after that I realized I was completely alone in that relationship. I think my heart actually broke right there in the passenger seat of his shitty Corolla.
